Milton Supman died yesterday. He was 83 and lived a full life. From humble beginnings, Milt was the son of a Jewish father who owned a dry goods store. Milt remembers that they were so poor his father, in order to make ends meet, would sell white sheets to the Ku Klux Klan in the area. That is not meant to be funny... it's a fact.
Milton served in the U.S. Navy in Okinawa. Upon his return to the U.S. he had a successful TV show. Actually, he did 5,370 live shows; still a record in the medium. His guests were some very well known celebrities; Frank, Sammy, Dean.... They all wanted to be on the show with the two dogs (one white and one black) that Milton had as his sidekicks on the show. And they all came on the show to suffer the same humiliation that Milton was subjected to each and every day. As a matter of fact, in his autobiography relaesed a few years ago, Milton Supman estimated he had been humiliated in his own special way more than 20,000 times during his career.
Growing up in NJ in the 1960s I was a BIG fan of Milton. I think I watched him almost every day. And each day I'd wait for White Fang and Black Tooth and .....the pie.
Soupy Sales died yesterday in NYC. He was 83.
