Federal investigators struggled to determine what the crew members of a Northwest Airlines jetliner were doing at 37,000 feet as they sped 150 miles past their Minneapolis destination and military jets readied to chase them.
A report released late Friday said the pilots passed breathalyzer tests and were apologetic after Wednesday night's amazing odyssey. They said they had been having a heated discussion about airline policy.
Now hold on here... I've been involved in conversation on my automobile that caused me to miss an exit, but I was at sea level, wasn't going 350 mph, and didn't have 144 people in the back seat.
The most likely possibility, they said, is that the pilots "simply" fell asleep somewhere along their route from San Diego.
One of the two pilots, first officer Richard I. Cole, said that wasn't the case.
"I can assure you none of us was asleep," Cole told ABC News. He declined to comment further except to say, "I am not doing very good." That may be the quote of the year.
Surprisingly not a single passenger was aware of the situation until they plane landed and the police and FBI were in the cockpit and aisles before the passengers could remove their bags from the overhead bins.
Delta said they would give out discount ticket coupons to the passengers.
I'm wondering how the calculation of the frequent flier miles is going to work out on this one......
