Can this be right... 2010? Where did (does) the time go?
As some of you know I've been pissed for years now because we still don't have the flying cars they promised me at the 1964 NY World's Fair, when I was only in the 6th grade. That was five years before the moon landing and Woodstock, and 37 years prior to 9-11. The other day I realized that the Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind were both only 12 years old when I was born. Palisades Amusement Park and Bertrands Island are gone, but the great sounds and smells of the Jersey shore are as good as ever.
I broke my front teeth on the steps of Dumont High School in the auditorium during summer playground in 1963. The dentist told me I could get them capped once I was about 17... still 6 years away at the time. When I first read Orwell's 1984, it was in the future. It's been 43 years since I lost my virginity (thank you AB). Although I've lived in Phoenix longer than I lived in Dumont, I still think of going to Dumont as "going home." My father died 27 years ago and never met my sons. Mom has been gone for 9. Y2K was already 10 years ago, and I've been married twice; once for 7 years and once for 10. My sons who came into my life 22 years ago are now 30 and 26. I've been out of HS for 40 years and college for 36. The best thing about that statement is I still have most of my friends from both. My oldest friends from Manhattan Terrace and Fuller Street have been my friends for as long as 51 years, and Ricky Molnar, my best friend, has been gone already for 9 years. The CD technology is new in my lifetime (I started out with 8 tracks). Gone are Nuns teaching in schools and teachers being able to discipline rowdy students (I think we notice the implication of that.) When I was a kid it didn't take long to flip through the TV channels because there were only 4, but it seemed, there was always something of interest on one of them. John, Paul, George and Ringo came into my home in 1964 and they are still here today. As a matter of fact, I jammed with them on the Wii just this morning. In my humble opinion they are as fresh and as good as ever.
Twenty freakin' ten..... Even without the flying cars I've had an awesome ride.
